Aloha Festivals P.O. Box 15945 Honolulu 96830 Hawaii's biggest (and possibly best) festival ends up on Maui after starting in Oahu one month earlier and traveling to each of the less-populated neighbor islands. Exhibits, shows and street parties occur throughout the Valley Isle. Past themes include 'Ka 'Uhane o ka Loea', which means 'The Spirit of the Masters' in English. It honored great crafters, artists and artisans of Hawaii's past and present. All events from August to October are free and staffed by volunteers. Call or check the Web site for more information. The return of the humpback whale is celebrated with excitement and joy especially in Maui. The return of about 3500 whales that come to give birth to their calves just off the coast of Maui is much anticipated. Visitors can take part in a range of activities like whale watching, lectures and the fun run. The joyous parade, music and other live entertainment keep the kids even more entertained. Maui Onion Festival 2435,Kaanapali Parkway (at Whalers Village) Lahaina 96761 If you have ever sampled a Maui onion, then you know what all the fuss is about. This festival, now in its 13th year, features live entertainment, recipe contests and even a 'Raw Onion Eating Contest', all in honor of the sweet little vegetables. You will become addicted to the fresh Maui onion rings, and may get an autograph from your favorite celebrity chef.
