Honolulu  96830

Hawaii's biggest (and possibly best) festival ends up on Maui after starting in Oahu one month earlier and traveling to each of the less-populated neighbor islands. Exhibits, shows and street parties occur throughout the Valley Isle. Past themes include 'Ka 'Uhane o ka Loea', which means 'The Spirit of the Masters' in English. It honored great crafters, artists and artisans of Hawaii's past and present. All events from August to October are free and staffed by volunteers. Call or check the Web site for more information.

One of the best-known writer's conferences in the country is held on the Valley Isle each year. Drawing such eminent guest speakers as Dorothy Allison, David Baldacci and Marianne Williamson, the festival offers a wealth of information for aspiring and professional writers. It also offers writers a chance to relax and find inspiration in one of the world's most beautiful places. The week-long retreat that takes place beforehand may appeal to writers who have extra money to spend on an intensive, specialized program.
